Costa Rica Lake Arenal Howler Monkeys

When you come to Lake Arenal  Costa Rica you are likely to be awakened by a very unusual alarm clock. Just before dawn you will hear a chorus of Howler monkeys that you might think came from King Kong, and can be heard for up to 3 miles. Named for their throaty howls, they are the largest of all the New World Monkeys and can grow up to 20 pounds and live up to 15 years. Feeding on leaves, fruit and flowers, troops of Howlers Generally howel at dawn and dusk to let other troops know where they are. Rarely descending from the trees the troops normally consist of 15 to 20 members and are visable all around the lake, sometimes coming very close to humans while feeding on trees in fruit.
These fantastic creatures truly add to the unique experience of Lake Arenal Costa Rica and contribute to the marvelous ambience that makes up this remarkable , one of a kind, region of Central America.
